The Artist
Sylvia Bretzloff studied Fine Arts at the University of Ottawa. Her work has been exhibited in the Ottawa Valley and she participated in the Pontiac Studio Tour.
For ‘Charlie’s Hill’, Sylvia Bretzloff used an intaglio print, using two zinc metal plates and the techniques of etching and aquatint. These intaglio techniques were combined to incise the landscape image onto the two zinc plates, thus creating a sunken area on each plates to hold the printing ink. The final image was created in various stages. At each stage of the process, the zinc plates were immersed in a bath of nitric acid. After a number of controlled acid bites, the finished zinc plates were inked and registered, which allowed Sylvia Bretzloff to print the two plates together to create the final multi-coloured image.
