Geomatic Services

Geomatics are an essential decision-making tool for the MRC and its municipalities when carrying out their mandates specifically as they relate to land use, forestry, public safety and the environment.

Client Services

For some time, municipalities in the Pontiac MRC have been able to view and search data on the property assessment roll using software developed by SMI Informatique.

The MRC provides services to clients, taking into consideration the number of hours of work required to carry out the job as well as printing costs, which are based on the size of the map and the type of paper used.

What is Geomatics?

Geomatics uses the science of land management to integrate a more or less complex network of databases containing descriptive and cartographic data, making it possible to obtain geographic information that enables socio-economic actors and organisations to increase their productivity and competitiveness while at the same time optimising services to clients and citizens.

Geomatics brings together three specialized sectors:

  • 1st: Data acquisition using a variety of technologies and equipment: Global Positioning System (GPS), satellite imagery, total station, georeferenced digital video, etc.).
  • 2nd: Data processing so that it is intelligent or interpretable. Geographic data is processed by specialised software called Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • 3rd: Distribution of information: it integrates system architectures and databases as well as referring to communication and telecommunication technologies.

The geomatics service works mainly with ESRI Canada’s ArcGIS software. The digital data used is taken from the BDTQ (base de données topographiques du Québec [Québec topographic database]), the BDTA (base de données topographiques et administratives [topographic and administrative database]) of the ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec [Québec Natural Resources Ministry], the SIGAT (Système d’information géographique pour l’aménagement du territoire [land use geographic information system) and L’ATINO (L’agence de traitement de l’information numérique de l’Outaouais [the Outaouais digital data processing agency]). This corporation was created in 1997 at the request of the table des aménagistes régionaux [regional land-use planners association] to acquire and share the digital data required for development plans and implement a decision support system http://www.latino.qc.ca.

The types of digital data used are related to various issues (major uses of the territory, agricultural zones, pedology, relief, forest cover, wildlife habitat, threatened species, surface material, digital orthophotography, satellite image, etc).

For questions related to the geomatics service, contact Guy Tellier, Computer and Geomatics Technician, by telephone at (819) 648-5689, extension 225, or by e-mail at g.tellier@mrcpontiac.qc.ca.
