La rivière des Outaouais désignée lieu historique

Rivière des Outaouais

La MRC de Pontiac se réjouit de l’annonce faite ce matin par le ministre responsable de la Culture et des Communications et ministre responsable de la Protection et de la Promotion de la langue française, M. Luc Fortin, selon laquelle il a désigné la partie de la rivière des Outaouais située dans les limites territoriales du Québec comme lieu historique.

La MRC s’était jointe à la ville de Gatineau, la MRC de Papineau et la MRC de Témiscamingue, pour la protection de la rivière des Outaouais en signant la Déclaration de Gatineau de Sentinelle Outaouais en décembre 2016. Sentinelle Outaouais souhaitait obtenir la désignation de lieu historique pour la partie québécoise de la rivière, à temps pour le 150e anniversaire du Canada.

La rivière des Outaouais est l’une des plus belles et riches en histoire de toute l’Amérique du Nord. Des peuples des Premières Nations vivaient sur ses rives depuis déjà 6 000 ans lorsque les premiers Européens firent leur apparition. À l’époque, c’est grâce à elle que le cuivre, l’obsidienne, le silex et les fanons de baleine ont pu se répandre à travers le continent. Du commerce des pelleteries du 17e siècle, au transport des billots de bois vers Montréal et Québec qui fait naître l’industrie forestière au début du 19e siècle, la rivière des Outaouais a joué un rôle important dans l’histoire et dans le développement économique du Pontiac.
